Urban Forestry and Shading
Addressing climate change through forestation
About the Initiative
Israel’s cities are warming faster than open areas due to urban infrastructure, fragmented open spaces and a lack of mature trees. Heat stress harms public health and people’s sense of well-being. Trees are among the most effective tools for lowering temperatures and creating pleasant, resilient urban environments.
To address climate challenges, in 2022 Yad Hanadiv launched an advanced urban forestry initiative. It includes professional tree planting and maintenance, protection of existing trees and data-driven urban forest management. An Urban Forestry and Shading Centre, Derech Tzel, was set up at the Israel Green Building Council. The Centre supports dozens of local authorities in advancing tree planting and conservation projects.
Our work relies on academic research, expertise in engineering, ecology and urbanism, and collaboration with resident communities. Beyond landscaping and tackling heat, we seek to reposition trees as essential urban infrastructure.
